Weekend flashback: more scifi shockers

It took some doing to try and come up with a more ridiculous scifi costume than last week's effort, but then I had the inevitable eventual "oh yeah, Barbarella!" moment.

The young Jane Fonda of course has an unfair advantage over a middle-aged Connery in the looking gorgeous in a flour-sack stakes, but even so!

However, the picture above fails to adequately display the sine qua non of bad scifi, the boots. As Barbarella had more and better boots than any scifi before or since, that's a shame. In fact, we can't be having with that at all.

I bow my head in shame to admit this as a schlock cinema aficionado, but I have never seen Barbarella. Why is she a skunk in the top photo? What can have gone so wrong in the future that she's a skunk?

I think she is meant to be a *ahem* pussy. Which is not necessarily a higher or lower level of horrificity, just different.

You really must catch up with Barbarella, Matilda. The sets and the costumes are unrivalled glossy high-budget schlock. Worryingly, you also start to believe that New Romantics Duran Duran somewhere had a sense of humour.

It's actually worse if she's supposed to be a pussy, because there's that whole Pepe le Peu thing going on . . .

It's particularly surprising that I've never seen Barbarella given my intense Duran Duran phase. I memorized their shoe sizes, but never got around to seeing their origin story? Shame! SHAME.

Shame indeed. There is nothing, I say nothing, finer than sitting down to a quiet evening with good friends, lots of liquor, and a double feature of Barbarella and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

As for the ambiguous skunk-kitten costume, I believe that's what all the best sex slaves are wearing in the future.

I LOVE Beyond the Valley of the Dolls beyond all reason. I also have all the Carrie Nations songs on my iPod, as well as Strawberry Alarm Clock's Incense and Peppermints, and select bits of the best dialogue from Z-man.

Does not the moment amuse you, Krakow? Hasten! Ere the portcullis bars your entrance to Elsinore!

'Ridiculous' isn't the first word that comes to mind ...

Ridiculous SF costumes seemed to be de rigueur in Dr Who any time up until, um, this millennium.
